Peter spent a lot of time in the saddle. |

This is not Peter, a typical cowboy |
Peter Haskew was born in South Carolina, according to one census. He became a Methodist circuit rider, taking the WORD
to scattered peoples of the emerging United States. While
on his mission, he met Ann Withers. (from the dairy p.109)-Dec 11, 1840.-Last night I stayed at bro. Drews.
That evening between nine and ten, on December 9th. 1840 between nine and ten of the clock, in the evening, as we walked from
bro. Drews to John Downeys, a little behind the others company, myself and sister Ann E. Withers pledged our faith to each
other to unite in holy marriage, if her friends should be willing, which I learn they are, so far as I have any knowledge.
I expect, if the Lord wills to return in a few days and see her again. Oh for the grace to keep my heart and soul and mind
in the Lord, that this dear sister may not be dissappointed, and that the Lord's cause may flourish")Jan.15-"According as
desired above on the night of the 17th Dec. 1840 myself and Ann Eliza Withers were joined in Holy Matrimony never again to
be broken off. The next day, the 18th and Friday, I left for conference, or rather for business an my fathers and then to
conference on which tour I was Absent 23 days:.. They
married and raised a large family. When he finished his mission, the family settled down and he became a local preacher for
a congregation in Arkansas. When
his wife Ann died, Peter married her older sister, Sarah Capers Withers. Their union lasted 5 years before he passed away.
He had a diary of his mission. Apparently it is in two parts. The folowing is from a letter by R.J. Haskew regarding Peter's
immediate family . "still have a pretty good section of the diary that he wrote about his work while he
was on the Linden charge. He seemed to have been born not far from Linden.
He mentioned Howels Creek being up to prevent his going to his appointment. A man asked him to spend the night, which he did,
and in the next sentence he said" I am on my way from my mother's where I stayed some few days" he mentioned one brother Robert,
and three siters Susan, Sara and Eliza. He seemed to have married while at Linden, and his wifes people lived near Macon,
Ala. which seems to have been South of Linden. Her father divided his property with her, and Peter Haskew
let her live on the property after he left Linden while he preached as late as 1846 on Prairie Creek mission, which seed to
extend from Mt. Hebron near Marion, Walthalls, plantation around Greensboro, Demopolis, Oxford and as far over as near Quitman,
Clarke County Miss. His father died Aug 15, 1841 and his brother Robert died a few years later, but he did not say where they lived. From one thing he
wrote I learned that his father (EDitors note-probably his father's older brothers birtdate) was born May 7, 1763, but
no place given. Peter Haskew joined the conference at Greensboro in 1833. He served St. Joseph Fla. and Appalachicola, Fl.
A link to His Diary while on his mission is below:
Peter appears to be a son of Moses Haskew of SC to AL. In his diary he returns home to visit his
father. He finds nearby The Smiths and Pouncy family very ill. Look at the 1830 Dallas Co., Alabama census below. Pouncy and Smith on each side of his house.
