John Haskew and Rachel Warren of Virginia 1696-1796

JOHN HASKEW AND RACHEL WARREN OF VIRGINIA  1696-1796

The Warren family was an early move in to this part of Virginia. It is reported that the first settlers into this area arrived in 1700. Rachel was born in Rappahonick 1707. This area was first King and Queen County, Then Spotsylvania County was cut out of it, then Orange County was cut out of that. Rachel Warrens marriage to John Haskew took place before September 11 1727, because in the old Spotsylvania County records Rachel Warren's father gives them some acreage as a wedding gift.

In the Salt Lake City Family History Center are located a half dozen Road work Order books naming John as a leader of a road building crew. He is refered to by at least six different names, indicating how much phonetic spelling was in use at that time. John was also made a constable for a while.

Spotsylvania p.115. (26,May 1747. John Askew appointed Constablep.115- 22 Sep 1748, Phillip Bush to replace John Askew--Orang Co. Tithables 1734-1782)

During that time he was to go after one of the Pigg family boys who was accused of Sabbath breaking. Apparently that was a punishable offense at the time. At any rate , we know from the Edward Pigg Will of 1739 (BELOW)  that at least one of the Haskew boys had married  one of his daughters and had three daughters  by her. This John Haskew born about 1680 and married Jane Pigg is the oldest Haskew in the US. He could be the father of John Haskew, who married Rachel Warren. For some reason John could never find the Sabbath breaking  offender while he was Constable. HMMMMM. John also raised and sold tobacco. He had slaves.  By the time he died he had only one child left alive, Rachel. The greedy nephews were real upset when he left so much to her. They sued and claimed he had become a unstable minded man and his daughter had taken advantage of it. It sounds to this investigator like she was the one who assisted him in his old age and he reciprocated. When they finally got their hands on his property, they quickly sold it and returned to Rutherford Co., North Carolina.

Pigg,Edward, St. Georges Parish, d.Aug 15, 1739, p. Apr. 7, 1741. Wit. William Waller, Samuel Brockman, William Brockman. Ex. Son Charles Fickes Pigg. Leg. Daughter Ann, wife of John Clarke; son Charles Fickes Pigg, 2300 acres of land I bought of my brother Henry Pigg, lying in King and Queen County, and adjoining Edward Smith, and is now claimed by one Hudson Allen; son John Pigg; grandaughter Ann Payne, wife of Barnet Payne, junr.; Grandchildren Jane and Mary Haskew. (page 318)

The husband of Jane Pigg may have come here from England on one of Piggs many ships loaded with settlers. Bringing settlers to the Americas was how Charles Pigg made his living.

The Earliest Haskew of record in the US is John Haskew. born about 1680.

VIRGINIA LAND GRANTS FOR TRANSPORTING SETTLERS
William Norcot 1658 by Lt. Col. Robrt Abrall & John Pigg - New Kent Co., VA

John Pigg came to America in 1644. Had 6 children. In 1658 was granted 300 acres of land in King & Queen Co., VA. He imported numerous persons to the colony and was awarded many hundred of acres for this service. Settled in King and Queen Co. as early as 1654. Mansion, named "Mattapony." Was in good graces of Governor Berkeley following Bacon's Rebellion, which means he was on the Royalist side. His close friend, Thomas Hall, was hanged by Berkeley for rebellion, however.
One of his six children , Edward had six children. His daughter Jane married John Haskew (b abt 1680). He is the earliest  recognized Haskew in The  Americas. It appears he did not live too long because  in Edward Piggs will of 1739, Edward leaves something to his and Jane's children; 3 daughters  Jane, Mary , and Ann (Payne).

Complicating the finding of  information of this family is the burning of the King and Queen County court house on two different occasions. During the Civil War and previous to it about 1820. It is known however that some descendants  were alive in the 1810 census (Francis Haskew); and in the 1787 tax list (Galeman Haskew). Nothing further is known at this time about the family.

I have included Joseph Haskew as a possible son because he was in the area and a witness to a land transaction in 1762. We have no birth year for him, however, he lived, married Sarah Ann Wood, and died there in 1777.

-10 April 1762 An Indenture of Bargain & sale between Robert Bohannon of the one part & John Pendleton of the other part was proved by the oaths of John Pendleton Jr & Joseph Haskew two of the witnesses thereto.
