         How we all got here...About 1500 AD the Ascue, Ayscough, or Askew family moved to Hopwas, near Tamworth, England. In order to distinguish themselves from their original family line, they took the H from Hopwas and added it to their name. So the story goes, that the name Haskew was first conceived.


    The first written evidence is in the will of Henry Haskew in 1509. Later wills are of John Haskew (21/4/1544: Richard Haskew 12/10/1544: and John Haskewe 1558.
       (6th edition- Patricia Ann Haskew (Van Der Valk) a compilation of information on Askew/Haskew origins. At Family History Center-Salt Lake City , Utah)--Patricia Haskew and Domonic Haskew of England have given most of the main English line information  and pictures, beginning with Mathew Haskew abt 1707.


     In her notes , Patricia mentions that religion eventually separated the family members. The Haskews were responsible for hiding priests when the Catholic religion was out of sorts. By doing so, many lost their wealth and lands. In her family line, the Catholic faith is still  predominant while the early US Haskews were mostly Methodists.

    The Haskews of England appear to be the source of the US Haskew lines.

1099 AD--One Quarter of the Haskew Coat of Arms dates back to the seige and storming of Jerusalem( 1st Crusade)

.1234 AD?Ralph Ashwye was a sheriff of London-1243 Was Mayor of London.

.1366AD?William Ayscough was appointed to the high office of confessor(the first ever to do so)to Henry 6th.

.1415 AD- William Ayschough was bishop of Salisbury.

.1430-1450?According to Dr.Thomas Gascoigne(lord say) who chamberlain of th household from 1447-50, Ayscough had such control over the king?that his rule is naught,(Asycough was blamed by many for henry 6th having no heir, when Henry wished to have his sport with the Queen, Asycough counselled him not to come nigh of her)(Ayscough came froma deeply religious family)

.1438 AD __William Ayscough consecrated Bishop of Salisbury by Henry 6th.

.1450AD__At the town of Eddington in Wiltshire, Bishop Ascough was dragged from alter during mass by a mob (incited by Jake Cade)of six hundred of his tenants and killed (either beaten to death or beheaded.) They also plundered his baggage and stole L1000 and L3000 in cash (ten thousand marks) which was a mine of money in those days. They also destroyed his records held at the palace there. He was left unburied.

.13 days later Jake Cade was mortally wounded whole resisting arrest.

1461 AD __The Assecu?s fought in the battle of Townton, Yorkshire and displayed their family standard on the field of battle, (awarded by Elizabeth queen of Edward.

.1521 AD --Anne Askew born. In 1546 Anne Askew of Lincolnshire- gentlewoman already convicted of heresy, was sentenced to death on the 28th of June by Bishop Gardiner. He was to send her to the tower of London to extract a confession from her (which she did not give), so he could use it against the queen ?Catherine Parr?. Gariner sent for Lord Wriothsley (chancellor) and his acolyte sir Richard Rich to interrogate her. They personally put her on the rack and operated the screws themselves, as the lieutenant of the tower declined to co-operate with the unique and unprecedented torture of a gentlewoman. All they got for their efforts was a statement.
